Patron Conduct Policy

This guide will display how Patrons should conduct their behavior while in the Library. The John Brown Watson Memorial Library System is committed to providing an environment that is conductive to study as well as welcoming to all users.

Policy Statement

The John Brown Watson Memorial Library System is committed to providing an environment that is conductive to study as well as welcoming to all users. To this end, the library has an obligation to ensure that students, faculty and other library users find a place for a quiet concentration and study within this facility. The library is also a teaching space with librarians who must talk to assist users in finding and understanding the information resources that the library provides. However, disruptive behavior is unacceptable in the library. Disruptive patrons will be asked to leave or Campus Police will be called to assist in removal. Library privileges of repeat offenders may be suspended. When necessary, the staff member may call for assistance. It is important that staff members apply the same standards of conduct to all persons using the library.

Disruptive behavior that is unacceptable includes, but is not limited to:

  • Running, chasing, roughhousing
  • Screaming, shouting, yelling, loud laughing or other noise
  • Eating or drinking
  • Abnormal, erratic behavior that hinders normal library use
  • Continued or frequent loud talking in study areas and throughout the library
  • Pushing, hitting, fighting
  • Throwing books or other objects
  • Bullying
  • Foul, rude, threatening or abusive language or actions

The following steps will be followed by staff members in regard to disruptive patrons:

  1. The patron will be warned and informed about his/her disruptive behavior.
  2. After the second warning, the patron will be asked to leave.
  3. If the patron refuses to leave, the staff will call Campus Police.
  4. The staff will complete an incident report and provide all information to their Supervisor.
